This is what the front window of my local comic shop has looked like since last week’s release of Captain Marvel!

What shop is that? I want to send them a thank you.

That is the front window of New England Comics in Brookline, MA.  It’s a shop run by some awesome people, and I’m sure they’d be thrilled to hear from you!

After a brief chat with Kelly Sue DeConnick at NYCC, I made a little promise to myself that I’d give this a try… so here’s the cleaned-up pencils from a new project I started tonight!  Ginny, from Pretty Deadly.

Check back in a week or two for the full digital painting!  (I hope…)

6pretty deadly, work in progress,

I had a fantastic time at NYCC this year.  It was my best convention ever, no exaggeration.  And this, of course, is the best thing I brought home: a commission of everybody’s favorite Captain Marvel, by the amazing Felipe Andrade himself.

… now I just have to find more wall space.

6Captain Marvel, CAROL CORPS, carolcorps, NYCC, felipe andrade,

I gave myself a Captain Marvel(ous) manicure. All ready for the Carol Corps tomorrow at New York Comic Con!
(Too bad I’m not ambidextrous enough to do it to my other hand…)

Critter Pin-Up (2013 Annual) by *lilyinblue (that’s me!)

I did this piece for the Critter 2013 Annual (available now, from Big Dog Ink!) featuring the titular character. It was a lot of fun to do.

Captain Marvel by Aaron Lopresti - Boston Comic Con 2013 commission

The always amazing Aaron Lopresti did this for me at this year’s Boston convention.  I absolutely love it.

(And a shout out to the two Banshees who told me to put this on Tumblr!  Awesome to see the Carol Corps out in force in Carol’s home city!)

What a difference 6 years makes…

About a week ago, I posted my latest art:

In July of 2007, I posted this:

This most recent time around, I was drawing Emma Frost simply because I felt like it.  I did a sketch of a woman during some free time, and her mood reminded me of Emma, so I ran with it.  What I didn’t realize at the time was that the last time I drew Emma (my favorite X-Man) was almost exactly 6 years ago.  Looking at the two pieces, I don’t think most would ever realize they’re from the same artist.

It’s easy to be critical of our own work.  In order to get better, we have to be.  You need to be able to see your own flaws in order to know what to improve upon.  However, when we do well, it’s also important to take some pride in it.  I was proud of my most recent portrait of Emma.  I learned a ton in terms of technique while working on it, and honestly thought it was my best work to date.

… but seeing it side by side with my last attempt at portraying Emma, I’ll admit… I’m even more proud now.  I’ve worked hard, especially in the past 2-3 years, and I think I have some proof that it is finally paying off.

Now somebody remind me that I have to draw Emma again in July of 2019.

↳ Hey everyone!

This July, from the 26th to the 28th, we’re doing a long overdue Carol Danvers appreciation celebration! Like a normal con but online, this is going to be three whole days packed with user generated content for one of the most awesome comics characters out there, Carol Susan Jane Danvers.

Like Marvelcon, you can sign up for categories to be organizers (and get a  badge for your icon for the weekend!) This can be anything from origins, Carol Danvers in the Multiverse, relationships and friendships, costumes, most badass moments, classic comics, important arcs, favorite artists, and more. You can message me and sign up for any of these categories or ones of your own. Sign ups end July 20th.

If you’re not in it to organize, show up at the #carolcon event tag for art, fic, all kinds of fanwork, the event chat, cosplays, and all the awesome Carol content!

We’ll also be having special events like:

  • The Carolcon Gift Exchange
  • Introduction to Comics, if you’re new to Carol or Marvel in general!
  • Giveaways!
  • Streams of Carol’s EMH episodes!
  • and soooo much more

So join us in the #carolcon tag July 26th-28th for an everything-Carol celebration on tumblr!

Emma Frost - Portrait of a Queen by *lilyinblue

Emma Frost… The White Queen, my very favorite member of the X-Men.

I did this piece for the best reason there is: I just felt like it. I learned so, so much while working on this, which definitely makes the whole thing worth it.

This is a redesign of Aaron Stack, Machine Man of Nextwave Fame. It was done for Draw Me an Avenger Jam IV - Redesign! on the CBR Forums.

… and because his robot brain needs beer, he comes well equipped to deal with that.

Last year I bet Laurenn McCubbin a steak dinner that our Captain Marvel series wouldn’t make it to 12 issues. I didn’t think the market would support it.

Yes, I know, I am a terrible person. But console yourself with this — I’m being punished, because I now have to buy Laurenn meat.

Congratulations on the first dozen.  I’ve enjoyed the book immensely and I’m looking forward to the next dozen!

I wanted to re-post this piece I did for the Super Hero Art Contest run by Dark Horse Comics.  Why?  I just found out it won!

Ghost - Dark Horse by *lilyinblue

6dark horse comics, ghost,

You know that moment when Wonder Woman shows up, and she has all of the extra armor on?  And that’s when you know that things just got real?  That’s what I was going for here.  I wanted to do a version of Diana when she’s armored up and ready for a fight, but still heavily based on her New 52 look.  I think it worked.
